On being muslim

If there’s one thing I’ve learned from watching the US election primaries, it is that it is apparently very “bad” to be a muslim today. I guess I should forget about becoming prime minister of Canada (scratch that from my to-do list).

What is so enraging about the whole Obama fiasco is that, no one, whether in the media or the politicians themselves have come out and said:

And so what if he were??? Are you saying muslims who happen to be american should’nt run for the presidency?

What if we were to replace “muslim” with “jewish”. What if Obama was running around saying:

I’m not a jew, I swear I’m not a jew. I pray to jesus every night. Please don’t be afraid of me. I’m not jewish.

I’d like to see 60 minutes ask Hillary like they did yesterday (sunday):

Do you think Obama is jewish?

and then I’d like to see Hillary answer (like she did yesterday):

I have no reason to think that he is jewish, from what he has told me, he’s not jewish, as far as I know

(”fyew”)

I’d like to see Obama, Mr. I’m all for change, stand up and say:

What kind of racist question is that, asking me if I were anything remotely muslim? Do you realize that we have milllions of muslim citizens in the US? Who the hell told you it was OK to ask such a question in a democratic and pluralistic society like ours? And what the hell is wrong with being muslim? I’d like you to tell me on camera, what you think is wrong with being a muslim presidential candidate. Justify your question, if you dare.

And YES I have a middle name “Hussein” (BOO! Are you scared? It doesn’t take much to scare you does it?)

And BTW “madrassa” means “school” in arabic. Any kind of school. Ask any 5 year old kid living anywhere between Indonesia and Morrocco. You know people use this word every morning in the middle-east.

Bye mom bus-el-madrassa is here (the school bus is here). Or YEHY! no madrassa tomorrow!

Do you think as president that I should pressure middle-eastern countries to ban the word from the arabic language? Would that make you feel better?

I would advise you to think about your questions before you expose your ignorance and xenophobia in public. And I’d like you to apologize to every american muslim that you’ve just insulted, right here right now.

And I’d like you to go to the mirror in the bathroom and shout: I’m a racist. And then think about how you got there.

The fact that I have to write this post and that people are actually discussing this seriously in the US shows you how normalized islamophobia has become in the West.

It simply disgusts me.

Yara
